Finally, I think I've pushed through my period of panic and uncertainty and unhappiness with my work.

I wanted to find a way to balance money earning work and creativity better - and to make good money from my skills and talents without having to do the same thing week in, week out. I'm easily bored and love nothing better than working on new ideas and completing projects quickly.

Less simple cheap websites for people, more online video for slightly larger companies doing good things who need video to tell their stories better.

Short, well-paid, achievable projects, and no guilt for spending time working on personal video projects (self-development).

It seems obvious, but JESUS it's taken me a long time to work it out.

Rider Spoke - Interactive Mobile Technology Bike Theatre Game at the Barbican!

My friend Lucy was reviewing this. She's a theatre critic. She invited me along for the ride.

Not often you get something that presses Geek, Art and Theatre buttons all at the same time.

You'll see what it is by watching the video.

It's inspired use of new technology - Blast Theory, the artists behind it, have created something really Of The Moment, that couldn't have happened until right now - or at least not in such an effective way. The key ingredients are:
the Nokia N800 (released in January, the sister device to my N93) a wide screen portable computer with Wifi wireless internet access and GPS satellite positioning; and The Cloud, the new City-wide wifi network.

For the benefit of both non-geeks reading this, these are the things that allow us, the riders, to roam around London, for it to know exactly where we are, to connect with the home server and allow us to hear other people - even those recording their messages Right Now - and for it to tell us whether the messages they left are near or far from where we are.

If Blast Theory want to, they'll be able to make a little map of all the hiding places, with people's recordings on them (either as an installation, or online). They could even feed the GPS co-ordinates into something like Google Earth, so you could do a virtual walkthrough of the City and you could hear people's messages, exactly where they left them.

So I thought it was all very cool and inspirational.

If only it'd been longer... ;)

I got back in the end, and they didn't seem at all bothered - but I *was* half an hour late for dinner on the other side of town.

I totally recommend it. Especially if you stick reasonably close to the Barbican instead of cycling for miles through the City's labyrinthine streets like me.

£10 if you rent a bike, £5 if you bring your own. How cheap is that? Given the average price of an average theatre show, I reckon they should be charging a lot more.

(PS - I saw yesterday that Google Earth have just started using the Geotag location information entered in Youtube videos so that you can see videos exactly where they were filmed. I'm geeky enough to always enter the Geotag info when uploading on YT, but I doubt most people do.)

They didn't know I was filming. Something I've found is that when you quietly set up the frame and turn on for a minute or two, it's amazing how often your frame fills with beautiful movement, purely by chance.

Although I'm on holiday in Canada, I've been doing some videoblogging this weekend for The Big Time Out festival in Cumberland, BC, the village on Vancouver Island where I'm staying with my sister. I've uploaded a bunch of videos to http://thebigtimeout.tv - it was all suggested and executed in the last couple of days before the festival.<br><br>Anyway, Saturday night's headline gig was Michael Franti & Spearhead. They're amazing, and Franti gets the crowd going crazy - but I'd been told I couldn't film them, and certainly couldn't post images or music to the internet. As it happened, I cheekily took a couple of minutes from the side of the stage and posted it anyway - I knew he wouldn't mind. But in the spirit of not breaking his copyright, here's a silent fixed camera Lumière of his shadow on the screen at the back of the stage.<br><br>When I filmed it, it didn't even occur to me that it'd be a way around the copyright thing. I just thought it'd make a cool Lumière.

Yesterday evening, on the way home over London Bridge in Rush Hour, listening to James Bond themes on my iPod, I was overwhelmed by the urge to flip open my phone and record this for the VlogDeathmath.com Drunk Underwear Karaoke Challenge. It's not Anarchy in the UK, but it was fun to do anyway. Next week, you'll be able to cast your votes at Vlogdeathmatch.com.

The rules of the latest Deathmatch are to use any or all of the words Drunk Underwear Karaoke as a basis for your video.

I wasn't drunk or in my underwear (it was tempting) but yesterday was my last day of work before a month-long holiday in Canada, so I *was* totally lightheaded with joy. Or maybe it was that I'd lost my wallet and so hadn't eaten anything all day.

Turns out that the challenge was designed to have enough appeal to attract non-videobloggers to the Pioneer Two Boots movie theater in New York where these entries will be screened on 11 August. If I'd known it was going to be shown to an audience on a big screen when I recorded it, i would have done it at twice the resolution. And I would have done it in my underwear. And I would definitely have done it drunk.

More pseudoarty nonsense, no ranting or babies today. Just stood on a spot in posh & leafy Chiswick and pretended I was a CCTV camera.Â Kind of like the way that Coppola used the camera in my favourite movie, The Conversation. But with a cellphone.

It's interesting what you notice, if you stop in one place and zoom in and out with your camera or with your brain.Â My phone is helping me to see things in the world around me that I take for granted and blank out.

Today has been a day for noticing how much things have changed since I've been alive.Â Not just non-smoking pubs, coffee bars and CCTV - I was flicking through Microserfs and thinking about how futuristic the email and geek lifestyle seemed in 1995, and how real it is now.Â And then I came downstairs and found this post from Gogen, about his memories of the 1980s.Â I said everything else I've got to say about that in my comment there.

In other weird news, the last film I did like this one, Everybody's Gotta Learn Sometime, might be screened in San Francisco tonight in the NewTeeVee Metacafe Pier Screenings after some of you were nice enough to give it a handful of 5 star ratings.Â I find this idea almost erotically exciting. Partly because I always associate San Francisco with The Conversation, and so I've always secretly wished I could live there.

Lumiere: Amy makes a video

The only thing she loves more than watching herself in my videos ("again! AGAIN!") is holding my phone and looking at herself on the screen, thru the little low-res camera next to the screen.

The camera was glitching, which produces quite a nice effect. There's no sound because this is a Lumiere.

It doesn't seem to matter how many times you say that, people still say "Oh! I can't hear anything."

Just goes to show how pointless it is to write text on a videoblog. Why am I even writing this? You're not reading it. I killed a man in Reno just to watch him die.

Nokia: Connecting People

Nothing really. Just a snapshot from the council housing estate that makes up one half of our road. With nice crappy audio that gives a flavour of the area.

The other half is being 'gentrified' by people like me, with privately owned terraced houses rising 40-50% in value in the last two years. A 3 bed house is now worth £600k ($1.2m). When I was working in Investor Relations, I used to find this estate a scary place to walk through, and avoided it. Now I walk through it at least twice a day to get the bus.

When I passed this Nokia box just now, I was in the middle of calculating that the retail price of my Nokia phone was around a month's salary on minimum wage after tax - and a quarter of a year or so on the dole.

On the plus side, I think 3 to 5 thousand people in the City take home bonuses of over one million pounds ($2m) each year, now (in addition to their 6 figure salaries, of course) - and in total around £10 billion is given in bonuses in the uk. So I'm sure all that will trickle down soon enough. That's the theory, isn't it? Strange it hasn't happened yet. And last week our finance minister became our PM, promising opportunities for all. Things can only get better.

But anyway, what the fuck am I wittering on about my neighbourhood and the economy for? This is just a video of a dirty, broken down, badly-patched-up high tech box on my street.

But screw it - at Pixelodeon, I was talking to Daniel and David and Michael about a logo for Twittervlog for the new site while we were drawing on our placemats like kids at Mel's Diner, and Daniel (I think) pointed out the obvious gag to me: that TwitterVlog was TV. So I've registered Twittervlog.tv - which is perfect. I've made a nice square red TV Guide logo and I'll be uploading everything there in the next couple of days. HURRAY! And then I'll get back on the case posting films again.

A crucial inconsequential moment. The only one I've posted all week. It's been a H.A.R.D. week.

Lumiere Rules is a game I've been wanting to play for a few weeks, inspired by Andreas.

I put down my Nokia for the first time in months and picked up my old Kodak DX7440 (which, totally coincidentally and appropriately) Andreas recommended to me before I even started Fatgirlinohio, when I was looking for a camera and was admiring the colours on his photos and videos on his blog. I love that camera. I needed it for this because it has a flat bottom, unlike my Nokia.

Waking up

Today, I realised that everything i've been looking for is right here in front of me.

It's happening right now.

It might not be your dream, but it's mine, and I've only put the pieces together after meeting everyone at Pixelodeon and seeing all the curated sessions of films.

This is why i've fallen in love with internet video distribution. Funny how it's taken me so long to realise the obvious.

From my Twitter, 9.40 this morning: "At bus stop on Shepherds Bush Green, waiting for 2nd bus. Someone has written a whole Tennyson poem on the glass in magic marker."

I wanted to post this video there and then, but I was late for school, and didn't have time - so instead I cut it in my phone on the bus on the way home and whispered into my phone like a madman to record the audio :)

I take this route to the store every day, and of course i never notice any of the things in this video.

It's great to stop and try to see ordinary things through fresh eyes.

I was just answering Trine's thesis questions about what prompts me to post... and how audience-focussed I am.

for a long time i've wanted to post more simple snapshots of things i see and like.

but i've been afraid of putting up stuff that's too inconsequential... and boring you.

anyway, i was thinking all this just as i was passing the corner of our road, with the pillar (post) box lit up bright red in the sun... and i just pressed Record and stayed still.

A car came past with bass thumping so loud it set off another car's alarm, then a third car raced round the corner. and a man with crutches hobbled past.

Then i pressed stop. It was just 20 seconds of nothing... but it captured something about our neighbourhood. like a flickr snapshot... but moving.

the more i vlog from my phone, the more open i am to the world around me and the more moments i have like this.

And I've realised that i'm starting to go out looking for them. so, instead of things happening to me that prompt me to post, i'm actively starting to look for things to post.

it's helping me enjoy this city... a place I've HATED living for the last 10 years. So in a small but significant way, it's changing my life.

WHY I'M NOT SORRY IF I BORED YOU TODAY:
finally, what I'm also realising is that if I post short pieces everyday, I can put all sorts of things up here that will appeal to all sorts of people at different times. which was my aim in setting it up - to share any and all moments from my life that i felt i wanted to share.

That's one of the beautiful things about this medium, as opposed to TV. You don't have a limited timeslot in which you MUST appeal to the maximum number of people.

For those of you who thought today's video was a bit So What... subscribe in your Google Reader and come back tomorrow or the next day. You might see something you prefer - and it won't cost you nuffink.

Pixelodeon Promo from Paris

This is a promo I've made for Pixelodeon, shot in Paris yesterday. We went for a couple of days for our 5th wedding anniversary. It was amazing. My phone ran out of battery, so I had to wait to come home to cut and post this.

I'm having a few vids screened at Pixelodeon and, um, now I'm going.

I don't know if you can tell from this video, but I'm excited.

Kate's new album is being released this month! (http://www.myspace.com/katedimbleby/).

Her brother Henry, who runs the Leon chain of fast healthy food restaurants, was being interviewed on Smooth FM and they played the first track from the album.

It's the first airplay it's had, so Amy and I listened in while Kate was out having fun somewhere. When the song finishes, it's like she's leaving the house...

PS Thanks for your well wishes about my pus. The doctor said he'd never seen Hand Foot & Mouth Disease in an adult before - and quarantined me for a week. It hurts less now and doesn't look so bad, so I've taken off the plastic bag, but I'm tired and bored and feeling a bit low so I'm going to take a bit of a break from things like Twitter and the Yahoo videoblog group so i don't sit here all day writing more stir crazy rubbish. Blogger's remorse...

****UPDATE****CHRIST! Now the videos aren't uploading at Blip, so this is an empty post. Technical nightmare day. GRRRR. And I was up til 3 trying to fix my phone. Why now?*****

... And i don't just mean a physical one, man... ;-) But wow, I think i am killing my N93. Almost 50 videos shot, cut and posted with it in the last 3-4 weeks with few problems, but now it's crashing like a Windows box. Lost everything 4 times last night while trying to cut this, which is usually easy. And 2 more crashes this morning. The edit system doesn't allow you to save, only export to a finished file, and often it's the export that crashes the phone. Bad bad bad design. I mean, it's pretty cool to be able to cut in the phone, but several things like this could be so much better. Wish i could tell them. Maybe it's better in the newer N95. Will have to wait a year to find out though. I really hope this one's not dying - I've been enjoying this vlog. RAAAAAAAAA! I forgot to say - you can upload tags remotely on Blip by putting in your email body the word tags, then a colon and then your tags, separated by commas or spaces. So an email with

in the email body will tag your post on blip with those words.
That was one of the points of this post. My baby distracted me with her filthy mouth.

At 6.53 this evening, there was a flashmob at Victoria Station in London. If you don't know, the idea of a flashmob is that everyone gathers, and at the appointed time, starts doing something together. In this case, dancing to the music in their headphones. A silent rave. These used to be small things, with a few dozen people quietly dancing while the commuters looked on in confusion. Not any more.

Were you there? It was pretty wild.
